I do not condone the death penalty for anything. I believe that there are worse fates than death such as life inprisonment in maximum security |

I'm strongly opposed to government sanctioned killing, as well. Although Hussein's crimes were beastly and hideous, a country's legal and political system should be more civilized.
It's important to remember that the atrocities and oppression he allowed under his regime are not the sum total of his life. I find it improbable to suppose he never committed any acts of kindness and never showed any mercy or charity during his life. Clearly, in Hussein's case, the good does not even come near outweighing the bad. At the same time he was not a fairy tale monster. He had parents and family. He had many people who hated him, yes, but he had people who loved him as well.

Expect a hell of a lot more attacks to come, over his execution.
The whole thing was a show trial. |

I am not typically a proponent of the death penalty either, BUT in cases of crimes against humanity like Saddam. When you talk about even the execution of a serial killer, the grief they impose is amazing and hard to argue it is NOT deserving of the death penalty. Then when you consider the MILLIONS that Saddam was involved in killing, torturing, raping then it would be impossible to convice me the rope was not the solution.
As for the trial, I don't even know why they had one.... |

An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.
I feel he was better off left in captivity by himself, to live out the rest of his days. It would force him to every day think about what he has done with nothing else to do.
Killing him just lets him escape. |

“I feel saddened by the death of Saddam, not because he deserved to live but because it is taking place under US occupation of Iraq”- Nafeesa Zafar, Pakistan

I recently listened to a podcast of a Stephen King interview/reading he did in the UK. King said the same thing as you Shadow: capital punishment is wrong except for monsters like serial killers and megalomaniacs. I still don't quite agree with it, personally, but you share your opinion with very good company.

I think he's better off dead. To be honest, I think that if he was still around, there would be more problems to deal with. Somehow, he would continue talking to outsiders, and they would try to bail him out. It's just easier to have him dead. |

The problem with the execution, is not whether he deserved it (thats clear in my mind) but rather, its questionable timing.
Executing him now could mean that he will become a martyr, helping to fortify the efforts of those who are destabilising that country.
They should have imprisoned him until such time as the country became more stable, clearly under Iraqi control with no international presence.
Doing it now whilst seemingly under the influence of the USA could come back to haunt us. |

Political subjects i thought were taboo, but look here it is anyway.
wtf drugs are u people on man.
if you look into it and do some actual research you will find that Sadam and bush were buissness partners in the oil trade.
idiots :/ |
Thank you, we are so honoured as to have such an agile mind join our forum, welcome I already feel more elightened by your presence
Perhaps next time you can try to follow the gist of the thread. FYI it was the subject of his execution, not his alleged business dealings between him and Bush. The topics are distinctly seperate.
Oh and I'd love to see some sources that support your theory BTW. Heck if you have some evidence lets see that too, but if you have neither kindly do us all a favour and keep your grade school conspiracy theories to yourself, the big boys are talking here. |

I feel it is very wrong to kill another human being period. You take a person like Adolf Hitler who was clearly a mad man towards the final years of his life. Had they actually captured him alive I am sure that many people Jewish or not would of wanted to see him hang my family included.
I on the other had believe it is wrong. If people commit unspeakable crimes then they are clearly unfit to live in our society and should be locked up in a cage like the animals they are. I see this as being more of a punishment then a death sentence.
An eye for an eye will leave us all blind in the end.

Martyrdom is impossible to avoid in any case with this situation. Somehow fools will continue to push some issue and fight for something in the name of Saddam Hussein. But, if he were still alive....the same people would have a definitive target/goal.
The whole thing is disgusting to me. There is a hell of a price being paid, on many sides and I have NO imagination for what the ultimate goal is....for anyone. |
