Hi.
I am using a wrt54gs router, version 1.1, running Sveasoft Talisman firmware version 1.0.5 on it. I have tried 2 different versions of Kaid, the version told about in http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4820 and the newer? version at http://thoalex.greatnow.com/.
The first version seems to start ok if you read below.....
Tresspassers will be shot on sight !!!:/usr/local/etc/kai#./kaid
KAI: Reading settings from kaid.conf
CONFIG: Downloading settings from http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/connector/clientgetconfig.php...
CONFIG: 13 orbital(s) available...
KAI: Kai for KaiStation now starting...
KAI: Listening for UI's on :34522
KAI: Added 1 device(s) to engine cache.
PKTSNIFF: Setting up packet sniffer...
PKTSNIFF: Applying pcap filter 'ether src 00:0D:3A:4D:9C:14'
PKTSNIFF: Everything set with packet sniffer...
Here the problems starts, I start my Halo2 and choose system link but I never se any games so it doesnt work... When I abort kaid I also get this message...
KAI: Kai daemon shutting down...
Segmentation fault
I have now tried the newer? version (http://thoalex.greatnow.com) giving this output......
Tresspassers will be shot on sight !!!:/usr/local/etc/new_kai#./kaid
KAID: Kai Engine for KaiStation is initialising...
KAID: Kai Engine for KaiStation is starting...
THREAD: Engine thread started...
THREAD: Packet sniffing thread started...
THREAD: Orbital stream thread started...
THREAD: Datagram server thread started...
KAID: Kai Engine for KaiStation has started...
Same thing here, I never se any games so I suppose that it doesnt work ok. I am a newbie on both linux, wrt54 and Kai so i really would appriciate some help and support on this matter. I have read all threads I found and everything around it but have not a clue what to do next *sigh*
Here is my kaid.conf....

A few questions. Are you using XBMC's built in Kai gui to connect to the engine on the router, or are you just booting Halo 2 directly? If not, do you have a gui running anywhere on your network?
I know it's a pretty "duh" question, but it may be the problem. |

It exists no "duh" questions, me as an real newbie asking many questions you shake your heads to.....
It isnt complete program then they have released to the wrt so I have to use my computer to run another part of the program? What is the thing about having it in my router if I need to have my computer running anyway!? Do you install files on the xbox itself then to "complete" the xlink, doesnt you get your xboxed banned that way if going xboxlive for downloading new maps etc?
I tried to connect to the engine in my wrt with my xlink program by disabling the "engine" part but with no success, the wrt did noticed that something checked for it but the program on my computer didnt find the engine.
Maybe me being to tired when trying also, work all day and cant expiriment until my small daughter has gone to bed *sigh*

Ah yes. You need a gui to connect to the engine. A popular choice is using your PC, but if you're doing that, then might as well run the engine on the pc as well. If you don't have PC you can install XBMC on your xbox (Xbox needs to be modded to do this) and then run a gui on the Xbox without the need for a PC. Also, your Xbox will get banned if the mod is on while you sign on to live.
Ok, you you've tried running a GUI on the PC, that's a step in the right direction. Also, you have to keep SSH/telnet open while running the engine. Can you paste what it says in the SHH console while Kai GUI connects?
Thanks. |

Ok *sigh*
I didnt understand that being a noob, I thought the wrt program took care of everything.
Ok, when trying to connect with my pc and xlink to the wrt engine I get following response... UI: Parsing UI command: KAI_CLIENT_DISCOVER;
over and over again but my gui in windows does not discover the engine.
I have tried to change EngineBind = :0 to EngineBind = :37500 as stated in various documents here and forwarded this port in my router to its inside adress 192.168.1.1. Still same response and the wrt dont sense when I go into xlink mode with my xbox, it does not discover my xbox.....
To get a better setup (no pc involved) I want to install XBMC on my xbox. I have searched internet for an "ready 2 install" file but not found anyone due to what they say legal cause?! Talked to a friend who has it installed in his machine and who promised me an copy of it to in the weekend.
He said that some modchips was so smart that if you started with the chip activated it searched for ceartin startup-files and renaming the XBMC to that name would autostart it when chip was activated (if something called evo was installed) and if started with chip deactivated you started the orginal dashboard making it possible to use the xbox live, downloading new maps etc.... Its rather important that I dont loose the opertunity to use my xbox the Microsoft way.
People also gossips about that Microsoft nowdays checks your content on your xbox harddisk and checks for "illegal" things. I know that they check how many partions you have and so on, but how far does they take it? Of course I wont go xboxlive with chip activated, I blocks internet access to my xbox while not playing live due to the reason many new games "phones home" and give tells about your seriel and what game you are using. This should not give any problems using xlink? I mean, xlink is on my local network and its either my computer or wrt54 (containing the xlink engine) who talks with internet......
I have installed a Xenium chip (flashed it like 3 months ago) in my xbox for abroad games, dunno what capabilities this have yet like starting up files by its own when activated, maybe someone could enlight me in this matter?
I think I could manage to ftp the files into my xbox and so but should really appriciate if someone "could hold hand" while doing it by writing a step by step guide. I guess that it exists many more noobs like me wanting the information and a possiblity to learn more about it but badly needing info of how it works and what way to getting started.
All information and all pointers how I should do is great as I am being a noob
Kindest regards Peter |

Some tips to get you going:
1.) Try a different firmware... I use dd.wrt.v22.r2, which has the latest kaistation embedded, but is based on the Alchemy f/w.
2.) Try uninstalling, then reinstalling Xlink Kai on your PC. Make sure your Kai Port is set to 30000.
3.) Go here for xbmc builds (to be d/l via bittorrent) http://bitspace.dyndns.org:6560/. If you've never set up XBMC before, go here http://manual.xboxmediacenter.de/wakka.php?wakka=Index. Also recommend going here http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?s=d8abc7a103751a7975a6dc17c4500e32;act=ST;f=23;t=7804
4.) After you've installed XBMC, get a hold of Kaid Control Pad here http://www.xbmcscripts.com/modules/mod_docman/includes_frontend/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=132&Itemid=36.
Read the text files on how to set up. Try changing your sniff device setting to "br0". This app will let you restart and connect to KAID directly from the XBMC Kai UI.
5.) Router port foward: 30000 UDP to PC's ip address + 37500 UDP to XBOX's ip address or 192.168.1.0.
Basically, your PC Kai UI will be a backup, your XBMC Kai UI will be primary. Enter your Kai user and pw in the XBMC settings screen. If you don't choose to install Kaid Control Pad, just unplug your router to reboot each time.
For being a noob, you seem to know more than most... My biggest tip I could give is USE THE SEARCH FEATURE of this forum, as well as other forums too. There is a ton of information out there, it just takes some snooping around to find it... and so each noob asks for a step-by-step guide with their problems. Enter the right criteria and you'll have some luck getting answers to your headaches.
If you haven't been... go here www.xbox-scene.com for info on your modchip and a whole lot more. Tons of tutorials with FAQ's and a responsive forum community.
I'll cut it there... don't want to overload you. Good luck and keep us posted!
Cheers |

Thanx for all tips.... I should read all links tomorrow night
I can tell about how far I have manage now so you can tell me if I am wrong (plz check my config and ideas) and to let other noobs get some idea of what could work for them.........
I think it runs ok on Talisman 1.0.5 now, using downloaded version in rw area wich I copy to tmp area on startup with following commands
cd /tmp <----- Change to tmp library
cp -a /usr/local/new_kai /tmp <----- Copy whole library to the tmp area
cd /tmp/new_kai <----- Change to kaid library
./kaid -d & <----- Start as demon (service)
To stop and start the engine I use putty and ssh which gives me and window with directaccess to the shell in the wrt (usefull).
To ensure that my xbox doesnt trying to be smart and talk with Microsoft I added this two lines in my iptables. Im no expert and trying to learn how iptables works so this maybe not being the right thing to do but it works for me anyway. My private network is 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.255 and 192.168.1.21 is the ip of my xbox. First line says that it ok with the router to send packets local on my network, the second line says that if it tries to send any packet to another net (outside, internet) just drop it.
/usr/sbin/iptables -I FORWARD 1 -p ALL -s 192.168.1.21 -d 192.168.1.0/24 -j ACCEPT
/usr/sbin/iptables -I FORWARD 2 -p ALL -s 192.168.1.21 -d 0/0 -j DROP
If you thinks of use the rules above, plz check with someone really good at iptables so you get it right. I take no responsibility if you ban yourself!!!! This works for me (no contact with xbox live) but you could get another result.
For more info look at http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/docs/xboxphoneshome.html and similar sites about the "phone home" code in newer games getting your seriel banned if chip activated when xbox having internet access.
I have now got an version of xbmc which I ftp:ed into my xbox to E:\apps\xbmc. I had great troubble using cuteftp so I switched to "total commander" and that did work 100%.
I also got an cd now with evolutionX+303 on it, when starting with chip activated my xbox reads this cd and starts the program. When the program is running I can choose "Launch menu", "Apps" and there after "Xbox Media Center". This way I can start the ordinary way with my chip deactivated, logging in on xbox live for downloading new maps etc.
When Xbox media center is running I can choose the Xlink Kai alternative and browsing all ongoing games on like Halo2.
But when I choose one I would like to participate in so does it say "XBMC is unable to confirm your network is reachable. you may experience difficulties joining or hosting games." I think this is due to that I have not mapped my ports right or something. Im to tired tonight to check so I will do that tomorrow when checking the links.
The config here is almost as before, a wrt54gs v1.1 running Sveasoft Talisman 1.0.5, the xlink engine downloaded from http://thoalex.greatnow.com/ using a really good tool editing the files directly in my wrt downloaded http://www.hetos.de/bwlog.html (check it out if you have a wrt54!). The port 37500 is forwarded to the inside of the router 192.168.1.1. I dunno if it is right but it is what I have read it should be ?!
I cannot still connect with my pc (windows) xlink gui, it doesnt find the engine running on my wrt54gs but my xbox find it (even if I cant join the games)
My kaid.config file
Verbosity = 0
UIBind = :34522
OrbPort = 34525
EngineBind = :37500
EnginePAT = 0
SniffDevice = br0
MacLearningMode = Auto

Once again, BIG thanx for the tips on what to do and the sites containing stuff and info, I will check it *promise* I have checked this site as good as I could. The problem is maybe that its so much information so my head got overloaded and I couldnt save that who was of value.
I think it should be a lot easier if someone could write a overview explaining what is required, where to get it and a simple howto, it would save a LOT of time for us noobs and newbies who also wants to play via xlink (as it rules comparing to xbox live *BIG tnx teamxlink*) as easy as possibly. If I dont need to have my computer on to do it Im happy as it makes much noise and heats up my bedroom alot (good at winter but not warm fall nights).
Kindest regards Peter |
