There's a few reasons. First, can you play other games? If not, stop right now and go through the Quickstart guide, since you have a fundamental error with your configuration. It could be because you've port-forwarded wrong and your network is not reachable, or it could be due to a software firewall, or any other number of reasons. Once again, do not continue reading and please follow the relevant documents.

If you've been able to play on Kai before, keep reading.

Some reasons are as follows:

- Other users who you are trying to play with have download XBox Live patches and download content, making the game a different version to the one you own. This can make games not appear at all, or fail when attempting to join. Sometimes, these patches and content become available to non-XBox Live subscribers and can be downloaded from various places. We are NOT here to tell you where to find such files, but search and ask PRIVATELY if you must. NOTE: REPEATEDLY REQUESTING FOR THESE FILES OR POSTING ANY LINKS TO DOWNLOAD SUCH FILES WILL LEAD TO BANS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

- Some games enforce ping limits (eg. Ghost Recon 2 for XBox). If your ping to the host is not within a certain limit, you will be unable to join (even if it appears in the list of games you can join). Sometimes, trying a few times can overcome this, although if you are way over the limit, there is nothing that can be done.

- Some games do not allow cross video region play ie. NTSC and PAL users of a game cannot play against each other. Absolutely nothing you can do about that (eg. Ridge Racer for PSP).

- The routing mode algorithms that Kai implements for a particular arena may be incorrect, however it would require that NOBODY can join ANY games and be problematic for EVERY user. If that's the case, grab some people to test with you in the Arena/Special Interest/Routing Mode Test Arenas/ and work out which mode is the most successful. When you find out, post a thread in the relevant console forum to have some more people test it out. When we are satisfied that there is a better routing mode algorithm for a particular arena, we will set it to that mode.
